Author: Chandra, Chennai. Videocon, a well known electronic manufacturer familiar to Indians, is all set to launch its own direct- to- home services in India. If done, it will be a new addition to the already existing six DTH services like Sun direct, Tata sky, Dish TV, Big TV, Airtel digital TV and DD direct. Videocon would launch under D2H band. The test signals are already underway. Videocon TV has about 20 to 30 % share in the TV market. There were speculations around that the launch would take place last year itself but owing to current stock market situation and the slide in Videocon shares, the launch has been postponed to 2009-10. Anil khera would be heading the dth venture in India. Videocon is planning to invest around one thousand crores in the coming year and has already added 4, 31,253 new customers in Oct 08. Videocon provides free viewing for one or two months and would charge 1000 rupees for installation. It also plans to offer over 60 channels and some news channels and pay channels for 100 rupees monthly. However, the big package is 350 Rs for 130 channels including sports channels and pay channels. In addition to regional packages, there would be seven packages in all. This will give a tough time to their competitors as subscribers will get channels of their choice. Unconfirmed reports say that internet connection would also be available for the subscribers but till now, a two way connection through LNB has not even been heard of.
